Shopify's Toronto office is way cooler than yours

Not everyone loves the open-office trend, but Shopify's new Toronto office may convince some doubters.

The online commerce company, which is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, opened its Toronto office — a 100-year-old warehouse — in May. The office has been a huge renovation project, which is why Shopify is only showing it off now. The company contracted M-S-D-S Studio, a Toronto design firm, to reflect Shopify's "core values of transparency and the open exchange of information," according to the design agency

The office includes 90 workstations, a boardroom, three large meeting rooms, six small meeting rooms, two phone booths, a cafeteria, a kitchen/cafe, a gallery, games room, break-out and informal workspaces, plus a reception area and retail shop. Check out photos, below: Read more...

In a move that could save travelers a lot of money on Internet access, Marriott will offer free basic Wi-Fi to guests who are enrolled in its rewards program, and who book directly through the company, beginning Jan. 15.

Marriott, along with other lodging-industry companies, is simultaneously petitioning the FCC for the ability to block guests' personal Wi-Fi, including Mi-Fi devices or smartphones used as hotspots. Sony executives switched to old BlackBerrys after cyberattack

Sony Pictures Entertainment had to go back in time after a massive cyberattack crippled its email system, cutting out modern technology and using old-school tactics to communicate and function.

Employees at Sony Pictures received vague threats from hackers in November that demanded money and included ambiguous instructions to "obey," but it wasn't until Sony's computer system was breached that it became clear that the hackers weren't simply taking the company's data; they were destroying it

Michael Lynton, the CEO of Sony Entertainment, detailed how the company responded in the wake of the debilitating attack. He told The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times that Sony implemented a "phone tree," or updates relayed from person to person via mobile device, and used employees' personal Gmail accounts, notepads and a cache of old BlackBerry devices.
